Abercrombie & Kent Clipper Odyssey
President John F. Kennedy's path through the
Solomon Islands is among the highlights of a new cruise
itinerary exploring the history of World War II in the South
Pacific.
Abercrombie & Kent is planning two
expeditions aboard the smaller, 118-passenger Clipper Odyssey
which will journey to some of the bitterly fought naval
campaigns of World War II.
Cruisers will journey through Papua New
Guinea and Guadalcanal, to name a few of the stops.
Highlights also include the jungles of
Western Chuuk, including an Imperial Japanese Navy base
considered second only to Pearl Harbor in strength. More
than 50 naval and merchant ships and 100 aircraft were lost in
Chuuk Lagoon. Many, protected by a surrounding barrier
reef, are still intact.
The Clipper Odyssey's shallow draft allows
access to clear lagoons and narrow inlets full of wildlife.
It also allows access to wrecks the bigger cruise ships can't
reach. A stern platform allows passengers the ability to
easily board the Zodiac boats used to land where there are no
piers or docking facilities.
